Berlin-Brandenburgische Schiffahrtsgesellschaft e.V.

In the summer of 1990 a group of inland shipping enthusiasts met on board the steam tug "NORDSTERN" [North Star] to found the "Berlin-Brandenburgische Schiffahrtsgesellschaft e.V."
or "BBSG" [Berlin-Brandenburg Shipping Society].
All the founding members were united in the conviction that, in times of economic and social change, which also encompassed the world of inland shipping, the last witnesses to a period of great river and canal shipping should not go forever lost.
The foremost goals were and remain the restoration and preservation of historic inland ships and the lore of their business, in order to convey to interested fellow citizens the working and living conditions of the inland watermen in earlier times.

The Berlin-Brandenburgische Schiffahrtsgesellschaft e. V. deliniated their goals in their by-laws as follows:

- Maintaining an historic harbor in the center of Berlin

-

Acquisition, restoration and conservation of older steamships and other watercraft that were characteristic of the cultural and historical development of the canal and river shipping under the preferential consideration of an historical preservation point of reference.
- Presentation of such ships to the public and in publications
-

Shipping historical research - especially of the Berlin-Brandenburg region, with the goal of making this publicly available
-

advisory support of private ship owners in the restoration of their historical inland vessels
-

enable the participation by young people and others interested in the business and conservation of traditional watercraft, as well as an insight to the historical professional development process

You can support these goals by becoming a member of the "Berlin-Brandenburgische Schiffahrtsgesellschaft e. V."
