The Exhibition Barge "RENATE-ANGELIKA"

On 1 July 1996 an exhibition could be opened which, from the breadth of its reach and the quality of presentation, exceeded the parameters of prior achievements. „250 Jahre Finowkanal“! ["Two Hundred Years of the Finow Canal"] Following the concept of the inland shipping historian Hans-Joachim Uhlemann, the active members realized the installation of this exhibition for the 250th anniversary of the re-opening of the canal - the oldest canal north of the alps. With this exhibition the particular importance of the Finow Canal for the development of Brandenburg, and the construction growth of Berlin was highlighted.

For the festivities on the Finow Canal the steamer "ANDREAS" towed the exhibition barge to Eberswalde und Oderberg where a great many interested visitors came aboard. The most prominent guest was the then Governor of the State of Brandenburg, Manfred Stolpe. The State of Brandenburg recognized the exhibition with a grant of 20,000 DM from the Cultural Council.

At the beginning of the 1999 season the museum could invite the public to another special exhibition: museum member Jan Schreiner presented on 1 April his newly assembled Photo exhibit "Ahoi Berlin" coincidentally with the publication of the photography book of the same title. The exhibit and book documented with great sensitivity views of Berlin, buildings, ships, harbors and bridges, all shot with a Leica from a boat.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the BBSG in 2000 a new permanent exhibit was opened based on the former exhibition: "Berlin ist aus dem Kahn gebaut" ["Berlin was built by Barge"]. Mathias Holfeld, Associate at the time of the BBSG, realized the editorial and academic concepts, and the execution.

Presented were in a newly arranged and extensively reworked presentaton of the urban and social development of Berlin in relation to its regional inland shipping.
The exhibition was arranged in four thematic areas:
1. History of the city and regional development
2. Shipbuilding and types of vessels
3. Development of the Regional and Berlin waterways
4. Cultural history - Regional shipping: Living on Board
At the start of the exhibition circuit stood the history of the BBSG with the life in the Association and the Association's goals.

After 2004 a large majority of the membership took part in the installation of a Hafenbar or "Waterfront Pub", and respectively a meeting room for the club, in the "RENATE ANGELIKA". In the course of the installation of the Hafenbar the exhibits were stored in the forward cargo spaces of the barge. During the reorganization of the exhibition, all of the collection was overhauled and conserved as had become necessary. To gain space an unused steel stair in the forward cargo area was removed. The historic forecabin was made accessible to visitors through a door opening in the forward bulkhead.
